Our History
Pool Tech was founded in 1973 by Dick Whiteaker. Dick's opportunity to enter the pool-building business started poolside. He got to know the owner of construction company while attending their children's swim meets. The owner wanted to focus on roofing, and offered the pool division of his firm to Dick.
Dick developed Pool Tech into what it is today by following this ideal: to create an exceptional aquatic experience for customers, at the greatest value, while developing long-lasting relationships.
Pool Tech is a successful family business. Our president Rick Whiteaker practically grew up in a swimming pool. So it's no surprise that Rick, who started swimming competitively at age nine and recounts eight- hour daily practices, succeeded his father, Dick, as president of Pool Tech.
"My two sisters, older brother, and I all worked our way through the business," says Rick. "I started out doing pool service work and after-care for pools. In college, I worked as a foreman leading construction crews building pools."
Rick earned a college degree in construction management and then worked as a project manager for Opus Corporation in Minneapolis and Phoenix before returning to Cedar Rapids to lead Pool Tech in 1994.
Pool Tech Midwest employs 40+ talented and dedicated experts, and we have gained a national reputation for quality in both of our specialty areas: commercial projects within a 300-mile radius of Cedar Rapids and residential projects within a 100 mile radius of Cedar Rapids.
Pool Tech is one of a select few distributors in the Midwest of Myrtha Pools, the worlds' foremost supplier of competition pools, and we are the only Iowa- based member of the by-invitation-only Masters Pool Guild, a highly regarded recognition of our expertise, work quality, and skills.
